So Amazon in buying Zappos shoes for $800,000,000.00.
Why? ure they produced a quality service, used good business processes, developed an inovative system to manage their shipping and receiving etc., but that isn't why they suceeded. Their are a lot of other companies out their that have done everything that Zappos has done, and in some cases they have done it better. The real reason I believe the real reason that Zappos is worth $800,000,000.00 is because Tony Hsieh created what he loved. He built an organization that he was passionate about that did business in a way that he was passionate about.
In the movie Jerry McGuire, Cuba Gooding's character is a great player, but he is only playing for a bigger check. Now his motives are good, he is honestly concerned about taking care of his family, which - by the way - he is a great success at. He great at it because he lives his family life with passion, even though on the football field its all about showing him the money. All is not lost for our hero though and at the end of the movie we see him recover from a pretty rough hit and begin to play the game with passion instead of just for a check and wouldn't you know it that's what gets every body to showing him the money.
What to have a great organization? What to make a difference in the world? Then whatever you do, do it with passion. Absolutely do it with excellence, and better than everyone else when you can, but above all do it with passion.
To paraphrase one of my favorite movies, "If you build what you love they will come".
